In a recent peaceful action focused on Russian oil giant Gazprom’s off-shore oil platform, 28 Greenpeace activists and two freelance journalists were taken into custody by Russian Federal Security Service officers. The “Arctic30,” as the group has become known, were removed from the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise by helicopter.

The Greenpeace action was designed to call attention to oil exploration moving north as ice retreats due to climate change.

Now, according to Greenpeace, the Arctic30 needs help. Several of the activists have already been denied bail and they expect the court to do the same for the rest of the group. The activists have been charged with piracy, a very serious allegation.

Greenpeace – a longstanding member of the Forest Stewardship Council – asked that we pass this information along to our stakeholders.
