First Plantation Forestry Certification Awarded In the U.S.
When the FSC Principles and Criteria (P&C) were first ratified by the membership, there were only nine principles and associated criteria. At that time, the document was entitled “FSC Principles and Criteria for Natural Forest Management." Two years later, the P&C were formally augmented by a tenth principle pertaining to plantation forestry. read more …

FSC Strengths Highlighted in Independent Study
The Meridian Institute, a Washington DC-based facilitation and conflict resolution firm, recently completed a collaborative study comparing the standards and processes of the FSC program to the American Forest and Paper Association’s Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program. The study was a paper comparison of the two schemes, comparable to a desk audit. An on the ground comparison is planned for 2002. Though other studies had been conducted, FSC, SFI, and The Home Depot all agreed there was a need for an independent, third party study of the two programs. read more …

FSC-U.S. Forester Participates in Certifier Audit

Heiko Liedeker, Executive Director of FSC International, brings a unique blend of environmental planning and policy skills to his post at FSC. Before joining the FSC, Mr. Liedeker headed the European Certification Initiative for Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Switzerland. Previously, he operated out of Frankfurt, Germany as WWF’s Senior Forest Policy Advisor, Forestry Department Head, and European Forest Team Chairman. read more …

Percentage-based claims survey Comments Wanted!
FSC invites our stakeholders to fill out the survey on www.fscus.org regarding FSC’s policy on percentage-based claims (May 2000). The aims of the policy were to: allow for public recognition of products with less than 100% FSC-certified raw material, reduce the barriers facing industries that rely on a large number of suppliers, and promote greater education and outreach to small landowners on how the FSC system works for them. read more …
