FSC General Assembly Gathers Diverse Membership

From October 9-14, 2022, FSC members gathered in Bali, Indonesia for the 9th FSC General Assembly. As FSC’s top decision-making body, the General Assembly convenes social, environmental and economic interests to debate and vote on motions that will guide the system in the years ahead. In addition, the GA includes a conference focused on issues critical to the world’s forests.

This year, members considered motions covering topics such as forest conversion, including remedies to address past deforestation, Intact Forest Landscapes, and ecosystem services. Because the General Assembly was held in person and virtually this year for the first time, the voting process was different from previous gatherings. In the months ahead we will provide a summary of the motions that were approved by the membership. For a list of the Motions outcomes, visit https://qa-ga.fsc.org/en/public-motions

In addition, the forest conference covered topics including the relevance of FSC to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Smallholder Access Program pilot results, revisions to the FSC Ecosystem Services Procedure, and FSC’s role in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss.

The FSC General Assembly is a unique event in the conservation and sustainability world, bringing diverse perspectives and credibility to the FSC system. As a form of direct democracy, it can be messy. Yet, at the same time, it is integral to building and maintaining a strong community of people and organizations who stand behind FSC.
