Build with FSC

Project owners, architects, communities, and business leaders demand environmental responsibility from their buildings. Choosing FSC®-certified wood is a great place to start.

LEED and the Living Building Challenge provide credits for FSC-certified wood and materials, which helps projects achieve these green building rating systems.

FSC’s Chain of Custody (CoC) system tracks wood products from point of harvest to point of installation - establishing transparency and accountability in your supply chain.

FSC Project Certification

FSC Project Certification

FSC offers Project Certification for companies and organizations involved in construction, building, or renovation projects using wooden building materials. It can be used for virtually any type of new build or refurbishment, civil engineering project, or events such as exhibitions and festivals.

Project certification:

  • Verifies that the wood in a building comes from FSC certified sources
  • Can be used independently or as a complement to green building and other related certifications.
  • Audits are conducted by an FSC-accredited third-party certifier
  • Provides direct recognition of commitment to forest conservation
  • Has three levels:
    • Full certification
    • FSC Claims on Components (i.e. windows or floors)
    • Percentage Claims

Leaders in Green Building

1 De Haro Base Build + Samsara Tenant Improvement

California’s first multi-story mass timber building
  • 100% FSC wood used for mass timber. 130,000sq ft. and LEED Gold. San Francisco’s first cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure, as well as California’s first multi-story mass timber building. The mass timber components were shipped by 19 rail cars from Quebec to reduce carbon footprint. Project Owner: SKS Partners. Architect: Perkins & Will for base build, WRNS Studio for TI.
  • The wood specified for the interior is nearly 100% FSC-certified, helping the TI project achieve LEED Platinum
  • Total GHG reduction of 2964 metric tons was achieved by choosing wood and shipping by rail from Quebec
  • 1,806 metric tons of CO2 is sequestered in the structural wood components
  • 700 metric tons of CO2 were avoided by opting for mass timber over concrete and steel

Portland International Airport - New Main Terminal

PDX Supports Local Communities, Forests, and Biodiversity through Supply Chain Traceability

The PDX New Main Terminal project is a major, 1,000,000 square-foot renovation and expansion of the Portland Airport’s terminal core and won a 2022 FSC® Leadership Award. A 9-acre mass timber roof structure was a key part of this strategy.

Led by the Port of Portland, ZGF Architects, Sustainable Northwest Wood, and Timberlab, the team worked with Port leadership to design goals around supporting the regional timber industry, tracking the wood back to its source, ensuring equitable landowner sourcing, and sourcing from responsibly managed forests.

Innovation on Toronto Waterfront

International developer Hines observed that modern tenants demand an experience designed to encourage wellness and collaboration, combined with state-of-the-art technologies and responsibly sourced building materials.

  • 100% FSC wood used for mass timber. 262,000sq ft., targeting  LEED Gold. Commissioned by Hines, Designed by 3XN Architects
  • Focus on biophilic response to wood and wellness plus natural light for improved physical, mental, and social well-being of tenants
  • 3,866 metric tons of CO2 is sequestered in the wood components
  • 6,655 metric tons of CO2 were avoided by opting for mass timber over concrete and steel
  • Timber structure achieves an estimated 40%-50% reduction in embodied carbon compared to traditional construction techniques

Formula 1 Grand Prix Paddocks

Ready. Set. Go. F1 gets a new more permanent home made with FSC certified cross laminated timber.

As part of a renewal agreement for the Canadian Grand Prix, the City of Montreal committed to replacing the temporary structures used for the Formula 1 race with a permanent building that would accommodate the needs of the event.

The new paddock would need to include garages for the racing teams, office space, rooms for the race sponsor, lounge space for 5,000 people, and a media center for journalists and broadcasters all within a short 10 month period and a budget of $60 million CAD.

Designed by Les Architects FABG, the multi-purpose facility roof structure incorporates FSC-certified cross-laminated (CLT) timber, glued-laminated beams and CLT decking supplied by Nordic Structures.
