Organizations across the United States (and the world) have set ambitious goals related to the use of products from responsibly managed forests. Once the policies are developed, however, these companies need to secure enough FSC-certified material to meet their goals.

The Forest Stewardship Council US recently took a closer look at the efforts of one FSC-certified company, Domtar, to develop a case study about their Ashdown, Arkansas mill. Through the creation of the Four States Timberland Owners Association, Domtar was able to bring family forest owners in the region into FSC group certification, supplying fiber to their mill and supporting landowners in their efforts to responsibly manage their forests.

As companies consider developing or strengthening their FSC goals and policies, the Domtar case study can help provide context about both the work involved and the ability to bring new FSC supply online through on-the-ground leadership.

This case study is the first in a series that FSC US will develop to highlight supply chain success stories and the people who are making a positive impact on a daily basis.

Domtar’s work with family forest owners in the Southeast US was also highlighted in The Guardian newspaper recently.

Domtar also recently released The Paper Trail and a short documentary, “A Portrait on Paper” to demonstrate why their FSC-certified paper from North America paper is a responsible environmental, social and economic choice.
