Southeast Family Forests Owners Visit Wisconsin

October 28, 2014

On October 7, 2014, FSC US, in partnership with Domtar and WWF’s Global Forest and Trade Network (GFTN), hosted a daylong landowner learning exchange. Eight landowners and managers, part of the Four States Timberland Association’s FSC group forest management certificate, traveled to Wausau, WI with a goal of learning about successful group certification efforts in the Lake States and to share lessons learned about managing FSC-certified forestland.

The group spent the morning touring two FSC-certified forests and meeting with the family forest owners who are part of Wisconsin’s Managed Forest Law FSC group forest management certificate. During the afternoon session, the group toured a local paper mill. The group discussed differences in forest types, management techniques, and FSC-certified supply and demand related to smallholders.

This visit was the first of four made possible by a grant from Domtar Paper Company through the GFTN program. The purpose of the grant program is to provide educational opportunities for smallholders from the Southeast and to recognize those landowners who are doing an exceptional job with forest management.

Thank you to Domtar, GFTN and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for making this day possible.
