Federal Trade Commissions Issues Green Guides

On October 1st, 2012, the Federal Trade Commission released their revised “Green Guides,” a set of general guiding principles for environmental marketing, first issued in 1992.

The guides and their current revisions are intended to help companies make accurate environmental claims about their products. There are six new sections on the following subjects: 1) certifications and seals of approval; 2) carbon offsets, 3) free-of claims, 4) non-toxic claims, 5) made with renewable energy claims, and 6) made with renewable materials claims.

Obviously, the FTC focus on accurate environmental claims is highly relevant to FSC. Many of FSC’s comments, provided during the official comment period, were incorporated into the final revision.

FSC US will conduct a full analysis of the Green Guides in the coming weeks and will share this with our community once it’s complete.
