FSC-Certified Solhem Saunas are Eco-Friendly Works of Art

The SmartWood program of the Rainforest Alliance has granted chain-of-custody certification under the FSC to Solhem Sauna LLC, of Duxbury, Vermont. This small and unique business works directly with individual clients to create one-of-a kind, custom saunas.

Nils Shenholm, founder and principal of Solhem Sauna, began researching and designing saunas in 1986, and in 1990 tested the first prototype. Production began with 1-2 saunas per year and has steadily increased to 6-10 per year. While Solhem (Swedish for “Sun Home") Sauna’s approach is to continue the tradition of sauna as a free-standing structure, separate from the dwelling place, Shenholm also designs indoor saunas. His unique approach to sauna building combines a thorough understanding of modern construction technology as well as a deep respect for tradition. The saunas are assembled from both certified and non-certified solid softwood components, in compliance with the FSC’s stringent percentage-based claims guidelines.

“I have had the opportunity to help support several local saw mill operations over the years through my business," said Shenholm, “and I believe that FSC certification will provide yet another means to contribute to the goals of sustainable forestry in Vermont and in the New England region. In this small, integrated way, we are helping to serve the larger, global picture."

Shenholm’s commitment to incorporating woods from well-managed, renewable sources is well suited to his respect for tradition, continuity and individuality in his sauna designs. The sauna builder works almost entirely with clients who are located within a few hundred miles of his workshop in Northern Vermont, and does design consulting all over the US and Canada.
