NRDC's new Collegiate Sports Green Guide references FSC

July 22, 2014

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) recently released a new guide to support colleges and universities in greening collegiate athletics and recreation. This free tool, which is endorsed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and the Green Sports Alliance (GSA), provides students, coaches, vendors and fans with resources on how to be more green, engage stakeholders and develop outreach strategies, identify funding opportunities, and track progress. The tool also provides technical guidance on key issue areas from energy and waste to paper and green building.

The paper and greener building sections provide information on paper product specifications, green building certifications and developing procurement policies. It also encourage users to source Forest Stewardship Council certified wood and paper products.  Colleges and universities using this tool should keep in mind that by sourcing FSC, they are not only protecting forests for future generations, but can get credit for it through AASHE’s Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS). To learn more about how to turn your FSC purchasing into STARS points, you can use the STARS 2.0 technical manual or contact us with any questions at info at us.fsc point org.
