Update on Motion 8: Global Network Financing

April 2, 2013

At the last FSC General Assembly in Kota Kinabalu, one of the priority motions focused on financing of the FSC Global Network. Championed by three US-based members, the motion was passed almost unanimously by FSC’s global membership. Motion 8, as it is known, directs FSC International to “contract with external experts to conduct an analysis of current and future capital and operational needs across the FSC global network.” Based on this analysis, the Motion further directs FSC International to “establish a financial revenue and expense structure that responsibly funds both the strategic and basic operational needs across the global network.”

To implement the motion, FSC International established a steering group to select and oversee a consultant team from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and UK-based Sustainability charged with evaluating FSC’s global network operations and finances.

To date, the analysis done by PwC/Sustainability has been robust and the debates have been vigorous. FSC US President Corey Brinkema serves on the steering group as a representative for North America. The group is on track to make recommendations to the FSC International Board of Directors in June.
