A Message from the Executive Director

In this issue you can read about a new comparative study of the FSC and the American Forest & Paper Association’s (AF&PA) SFI program. Jointly commissioned by FSC, AF&PA and The Home Depot, the report details many differences, and a few similarities, of the two programs.

While the findings of the report are a useful resource that we hope individuals and businesses alike will use to make informed decisions, what’s more important is what this process indicates: there are a lot of people out there trying to improve the way forests are managed, and they are taking it very seriously. Here at the FSC, we are proud of the scientific integrity in our standards, the rigor of our certifiers’ audits and the reward for exemplary management that our label signifies. That is the guarantee consumers are looking for, and the guarantee we will continue to provide.

We’d like to thank all of the expert panelists for their hard work, especially those chosen to represent the FSC: Mike Jani of Mendocino Redwoods Company; Robert Hrubes of Scientific Certification Systems; and Lynn Jungworth of the Watershed Research and Training Center. Their efforts helped to produce a solid report that we encourage people to go online and read at www.fscus.org.
