FSC Certificate Holder Wins a Major Design Award

Wiggers Custom Furniture Ltd., of Port Perry, Ontario, has announced that its “Kidney Shaped Desk” has been awarded a 2005 ADEX Platinum Award. Sponsored by Design Journal Magazine, ADEX stands for “Award for Design Excellence” and it recognizes superior product design of furnishings marketed to the architectural and design trade. Wiggers has been a proud FSC chain-of-custody certificate holder since Earth Day 1998.

Chosen from over 1200 entries, the “Kidney Shaped Desk” won in the Studio Furniture category based on its design, functionality and style. In its 11th year, this design award (ADEX) has established itself as one of the coveted prizes for manufacturers of products marketed to the trade.

The “Kidney Shaped Desk” is crafted from a rare flitch of Macassar Ebony veneer, which has been laminated onto a sculpted birch plywood core. This desk is FSC certified, and also includes subtle inlays of various woods known for their traditional holistic and medicinal uses. The finger pulls, for example, are made of Black Walnut, which is a wood that was used by Native American medicine women in traditional healing practices. Woods such as Hawthorn and Sassafras, which each have aroma therapeutic qualities that have been used for thousands of years, were used on the inside of the pencil drawers.

Wiggers has also crafted “Solomon’s Desk,” which is a special feature furniture design that was created specifically for auction at the World Wildlife Fund/Ebay “Nature Auction” to be held this Fall. Funds raised from the auction of this item will benefit WWF and FSC. In the meantime, this desk, which is also FSC-certified, will be featured at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) at the Javits Center in New York City this month.
