Economic Chamber Pleased to Welcome Longtime Certificate Holder

Last month, Bill Hayward, President, CEO and Director of Sustainability for Hayward Lumber Company, accepted an appointment to the FSC-US Board of Directors as a member of the economic chamber.

Hayward Lumber, has been a FSC chain-of-custody certificate holder since 1998. Hayward Lumber, based in Monterey, CA, was the first full line lumberyard in California to stock FSC-certified lumber. Hayward Lumber is currently comprised of seven lumberyards, three additional design centers and EcoTimber, the environmentally friendly flooring division.

Paul Harlan, Chairman of the Board, noted that, “the Board is extremely happy to have Bill as a member of our Board. As one of the clear business leaders in marketing and selling FSC-certified products, his knowledge, experience, particularly in the green building industry, will be extremely valuable to us. He is a committed member of the FSC family and we are very excited to have Bill’s skills and insights on the Board.”

Under Hayward’s direction, Hayward Lumber was the first lumber yard in the country to eliminate arsenic pressure treated wood from its offering in 2001 and is committed to building all of its own facilities using the latest principles in green building and building science. It boasts the world’s only solar-powered truss plant, which received the coveted Gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. (See April 2004 News &Views for more detail.)

Hayward said, “I am excited by the opportunity to share my perspective from within the building material supply industry with this organization that has played such an important role in advancing truly sustainable business practices.”

Hayward earned a B.S. degree at UCLA in Political Theory, attended Semester at Sea, and attended the Monterey Institute of International Studies Intensive Language Learning Program in Spanish. Bill began a small import/export business in Madrid, Spain, as well as participated in some construction projects on the Monterey Peninsula before taking over the leadership of Hayward Lumber.
