The Nature Conservancy Magazine Uses FSC-Certified Paper

The Nature Conservancy (TNC), a longtime partner, supporter, and member of FSC, has proven the old adage that ‘actions speak louder than words’ by printing their magazine Nature Conservancy on FSC-certified paper.

In the Fall 2004 issue, TNC has included an article about the importance of forest certification, and how it aligns with the mission of TNC—to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. The article focuses on the recent announcements by the State of Michigan to seek FSC certification for all four million acres of state-owned forestland, as well as FSC-certification programs for more than 200,000 acres of TNC-owned land in Maine and Vermont. The article also educates readers on how to find FSC-certified products.

Kent Gilges, Director of Forest Conservation for Canada and Midwest Regions for TNC, as well as a member of the FSC-US Board of Directors, said that, “the Nature Conservancy is a strong supporter of forest certification, and has seen the impact certification has had on millions of acres. By setting very high standards, FSC has raised the bar for all certification systems, which has had a significant impact on protecting biodiversity. We want to recognize that impact and continue to encourage land managers to strive toward a similar high standard. Our magazine is a very visible way for us to express our confidence in the FSC standard as it relates to our mission of biodiversity protection.”

Nature Conservancy is distributed by the Conservancy four times a year, and reaches approximately 600,000 people.
