FSC On the Airwaves
KQED, the San Francisco NPR affiliate, aired a one hour show on forest certification on January 9. Michael Krasny hosted the show, which featured FSC Executive Director Hank Cauley; Kate Heaton, Senior Forestry Specialist at FSC-environmental chamber member Natural Resources Defense Council; Cael Kendall, Manager of FSC-certified EcoTimber; and Dan Imhoff, author of a book on alternative building materials. The American Forest and Paper Association’s Sustainable Forestry Initiative was invited to participate but declined. read more …

FSC Headquarters Announces Group COC Certification Policy
This month FSC headquarters announced a new policy to facilitate chain-of-custody certification for groups of small wood harvesting, processing, and retail operators. The new policy retains the rigor of individual-facility COC assessment, but provides for the sharing of many of the administrative aspects of certification, such as reporting and liaison with the certification body, by an organized group of small enterprises. read more …

ForestWorld recently launched its redesigned website, featuring a new online marketplace for connecting supply and demand for FSC-certified products. The marketplace facilitates connections between chain-of-custody companies using emailed or faxed requests for quotations. read more …

National Audubon Society Gets Two Forests FSC Certified
FSC-accredited certifier SmartWood recently completed the certification of Silver Bluff and the Francis Beidler Forest, both owned by the National Audubon Society. The two properties represent over 15,000 acres of the coastal plain of South Carolina, and contain four major habitat types, including mature mixed longleaf and loblolly pines, mature hardwood bottomland, pine plantation, and natural mixed pine/hardwood. read more …

Pinchot Releases Results of Comparison Field Assessments
The Pinchot Institute for Conservation has completed a series of field assessments comparing FSC and the American Forest and Paper Association’s Sustainable Forestry InitiativeSM, the results of which will be available in the Spring. Catherine Mater, Senior Fellow with Pinchot facilitated the project on State and Tribal forestlands in Maine, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Vermont. The objectives of the project were to compare FSC and SFI auditing teams’ results for audits done on the same land at the same time, and to gain input from the land managers on their impressions of each system. read more …
