Update on Controlled Wood Company Risk Assessments
August 27, 2015
Effective immediately, company risk assessments for controlled wood will remain valid until FSC implements a new controlled wood standard. Previously, FSC International had planned to phase out the use of company risk assessments at the end of 2015. This is no longer the case.
This decision was made by the FSC International Board of Directors at their most recent meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Kim Carstensen, Director General of FSC International explained, “In consideration of FSC certificate holders who depend on the availability of controlled wood, and our responsibility to ensure the controlled wood system remains robust and transparent, the Board decided to shift all available resources towards the ongoing comprehensive revision of FSC Standard for Company Evaluation of FSC Controlled Wood (FSC-STD-40-005), so that it enters into force in 2016. The deadline for phasing out company risk assessments in countries without a National Risk Assessment or Centralized National Risk Assessment will be aligned with the introduction of the new version of the standard.”
FSC International will also revise the controlled wood strategy, starting in 2016, to update the long term goals of the system. Stay tuned for more information about opportunities to engage in that effort.
