Sustainable Northwest Wood
Sustainable Northwest Wood was founded in 2008 as a for-profit subsidiary and lumberyard of the Portland-based nonprofit, Sustainable Northwest. Sustainable Northwest Woodworks with small, mostly Pacific Northwest-based mills and landowners and sells only FSC-certified and reclaimed lumber out of its new 17,000 square-foot warehouse.

Experts at Sustainable Northwest Wood assist large and small projects alike to choose the right wood materials for their building projects and advise on the integration of FSC-certified materials into LEED and Living Building Challenge projects.

Sales at Sustainable Northwest Wood have more than doubled year over year, which they attribute to their rigorous sustainability standards and their unique product offerings, including FSC-certified madrone, myrtle wood and fir countertops.

“Our consumers expect wood products grown and harvested in accordance with the highest environmental standards. It has been our mission to make sure that thiscan be delivered to them in a timely and reliable manner.” - Ryan Temple, President of Sustainable Northwest Wood

Started as Dominion Tar & Chemical Company in 1848 in England, Domtar may win the award for oldest FSC-certified company in the system. Today, the company has become the largest Canadian paper company, the third largest manufacturer of office paper in the world, and a leader in the manufacture of sustainable paper and paper products.

Domtar was the first North American paper company to achieve FSC certification and has been certified since 2002. In 2009, the company celebrated its millionth ton of FSC-certified product sold and by 2014, Domtar’s FSC sales had reached five million tons.

Through the creation of the Four States Timberland Owners Association, Domtar brought family forest owners in the southeast US into FSC group certification, supplying fiber to their mill and supporting landowners in their efforts to manage their forests responsibly. You can download the case study of Domtar’s innovative supply chain solutions here.
