Colonial Craft, a leading manufacturer of hardwood millwork

This issue’s Partner Profile features Colonial Craft, FSC economic chamber member since 1995 and chain-of-custody certificate holder since 1994.

Colonial Craft, a leading manufacturer of hardwood millwork, was recently honored in the WOOD 100 Report, which is published by Wood & Wood Products to recognize the achievements of fast-growing wood product manufacturers. This year marks their 11th consecutive appearance in the WOOD 100. It also marks a 415% increase in sales for the company since 1989. The company’s sales increased 3.8% between 1999 and 2000 from $38 million to $39.5 million. They are an industry leader in quality hardwood architectural products including mouldings, door and window grilles and component parts.

Colonial Craft was established in 1965 and has since grown to 280 employees at 5 locations. The company is headquartered in Roseville, Minnesota, and has operations elsewhere in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Alabama. Employees are offered various education programs, including leadership training and English-as-a-second-language classes. Employees can receive up to $3000 a year to put towards degrees or other outside training.

The company takes a proactive roll in developing long-term partnerships with other certificate holders. They frequently visit sawmills and FM certificate holders to try and understand their processing and forestry needs. For example, if a landowner or timber company’s management plan stipulates that they need to harvest oak soon, Colonial Craft tries to build that species into their business plan.
