A Message from the Executive Director

Our neighbor to the north is to be congratulated for the tremendous growth and visibility of the FSC in Canada.

Under the capable leadership of Executive Director Jim McCarthy and the new FSC Canada board, FSC Canada is leading the way in North America in addressing indigenous people’s issues and bringing large industrial forest companies into the FSC family.

These recent events are illustrative of their progress and leadership. In July 2001, Iisaak Forest Resources Ltd. of British Columbia became the first Tree Farm License holder to earn FSC’s internationally recognized certification. In August of this year, FSC Canada, along with the National Aboriginal Forestry Association, co-hosted a two-day Indigenous People’s Conference in Ottawa. The conference was attended by over 200 people. FSC Canada is also working on a pilot project focusing on Northern Ontario’s forest management, the results of which, available at the end of this year, will contribute to the FSC Boreal Standards for all of Canada. We look forward to close collaboration with our Canadian partner on keeping the FSC as the leading certification system in North America.
