President’s Message - Navigating a Changing World
I am pleased to report from our February vantage point with a sense of optimism and determination. Yes, the world is evolving at an unprecedented pace. Yes, the future presents both immense opportunities and complex challenges. And yes, FSC in the US has significant hurdles to overcome. But through it all, our commitment remains steadfast. With our boots planted firmly on solid ground, we are ready to navigate uncertainty and drive meaningful progress – this year and beyond.
What does progress look like?
At its core, progress for FSC US means two things:
1. Expanding the acres of FSC-certified forestlands in the U.S.
2. Delivering tangible value to the landowners and forest managers who provide society with the many benefits forests offer.
Forestry sits at the critical intersection of science, sustainability, and real-world impact. With forests covering roughly a third of the Earth’s land surface, sustainable forestry has the power to generate positive impacts for nature, communities, and rural economies across the country.
The Impact of FSC-Certified Forests
FSC-certified forests aren’t just about responsible forest management; they are an essential part of the global sustainability equation. Our certification prevents deforestation and forest degradation. It safeguards high conservation value areas that might otherwise be converted or exploited. And, crucially, it upholds fair treatment and safe working conditions for the people who rely on the forests for their livelihoods.
Bringing Value Back to Landowners and Managers
This remains one of our biggest challenges – and one of our most important priorities. Society is only beginning to recognize the immense value forests provide beyond wood products. But change is happening. FSC US is fully engaged in ensuring that FSC-certified products are in high demand and that FSC-certified forests are recognized as vital assets in nature-based solutions
Yes, the world is changing rapidly. And yes, that uncertainty can be daunting. But I assure you this: FSC US will continue to stand with our forest managers, our processors, our wholesalers, and every actor in the FSC value chain. We see you, we value you, and we will continue to push forward. Optimistically.
