Register for the General Assembly

Prep Meeting April 27th in Washington DC

The FSC General Assembly (GA) will be held in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia from June 27 – July 1, 2011. To have a voice in the direction of FSC, we highly encourage members to participate and non-members to become members and participate.

The FSC General Assembly (GA) occurs every three years and is a unique opportunity for the FSC membership to deliberate and vote on key motions regarding FSC governance, certification standards and related policies. For a proposed change to be accepted, the motion must be approved by a majority of each of the three chambers that comprise the FSC membership (social, environmental, and economic). This democratic membership governance structure sets FSC apart from other forest certification programs.

To prepare for the GA, FSC-US is hosting a meeting for US members to initiate policy discussions and suggest revisions to motions so they are better prepared and more likely to achieve their goals at the GA. Motion discussions at the GA are lively and dynamic. Intra- and inter-chamber discussions lead to proposed revisions to motions and increase the chance that motions encompassing a balanced-perspective are approved.

We encourage all FSC members in the US to join the staff of FSC-US at a preparatory meeting at the headquarters of the World Wildlife Fund in Washington, DC on April 27, 2011.

Please RSVP to Andrea (acarlson@fscus.org) if you are interested in attending the meeting — either in person or by phone. The one-day meeting will include:

  • Discussion of key issues for the FSC system
  • Preview of motions and discussion of priorities
  • Intra-chamber breakout sessions to address motion perspectives and chamber-level objectives at the GA
  • ]Strategies improve chances of success at the GA, including inter-chamber and North-South diplomacy, managing motions, side-events, and proxy votes
