FSC US Exhibits at The International Mass Timber Conference

For the second year in a row, FSC US hosted a booth at the International Mass Timber Conference, held in Portland, Oregon, March 25-27. This rapidly growing event is the leading global conference on mass timber building, attracting professionals from across the forest, manufacturing, design, development, and construction industries.

This year it attracted over 3,100 attendees from 29 countries, 220+ exhibitors, and over 100 speakers.

Chloe Nelms, Jonathan Reese, and Alex Thoman, our new Pacific Northwest Regional Manager, represented FSC US to a steady flow of traffic.

Says Alex, “It was surprising to me to see how wood fiber is being used in so many ways. Most people I talked to were pushing for sustainability, and conversations were very positive. One start-up manufacturer said they were doing LCA’s, but also understood the need for legitimate certification so the consumer can see that their product comes from a well-managed forest.”

Chloe Nelms, on our Operations team, said, “I had very engaging conversations with attendees. Some were just beginning to explore FSC, some expressed interest in becoming Forest Management certified, and I was able to make new connections with some of our CoC certificate holders.” On a personal front, she said, “It was a great opportunity to expand my knowledge of mass timber, particularly around topics like traceability and cross-laminated timber. I left with a deeper understanding of how FSC fits into this space and how FSC certification plays an increasing role in discussions around sustainability, responsible sourcing and LEED point eligibility."

Architects in the crowd were excited about FSC US’s AIA-approved course around green building. Many expressed interest in lunch & learn-style presentations for their firms, which are currently being scheduled.

In the end, Jonathan Reese, Built Environment Strategic Partnerships Manager, said, “The upside of this show is that we’re out in the open market meeting with mass timber building practitioners from all walks. Many are using, or are interested in how they can use, FSC certification as a business advantage”.
