Conversations in Sustainable Fashion

In April, Maggie Abel, Senior Marketing and Engagement Manager for FSC US, attended the Sustainable Fashion Forum conference in Austin, TX. The Sustainable Fashion Forum, a media hub uniting fashion enthusiasts and professionals to foster innovative, sustainable industry solutions, hosts this conference annually.

This 2-day conference featured speakers from of the biggest players in the fashion space, including Everlane and Nordstrom. Presentations and conversations around circularity, next-gen materials, and responsible sourcing were major themes of this conference.

Speaking of next-gen materials and responsible sourcing, did you know that trees can be turned into textiles for apparel? Man-made cellulosic fibers (MMCFs). MMCFs are the fastest growing share in global fiber production. However, over 50% are sourced from uncertified forests, leaving them vulnerable to deforestation and illegal logging.

The best way to shift the fashion industry to an ethical, regenerative, and transparent low-carbon future, is to ensure the forest-based fibers being used are sourced responsibly from sustainably managed forests. The ultimate goal is to couple this with the circular use of fibers to create a truly responsibly and lasting transition.
