Wood Trends at High Point Market

November 6, 2019

As the world’s third largest forest products industry, furniture is key to FSC’s demand growth. With this in mind, US South Regional Manager Roger Taylor recently attended High Point Market (HPMKT) in North Carolina. HPMKT, which has more than 2,000 exhibitors and 75,000 attendees, is the largest furniture trade show in the world, with manufacturers, interior designers, architects and retailers coming together to market, procure, and discuss the latest trends. To help open the door to these conversations, FSC US participated in the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC)’s – Wood Furniture Scorecard panel.

These discussions included top scorers on the Scorecard, including Cisco Pinedo, founder of Cisco Brothers, and Jameson Dion with City Furniture. A key factor in their high scores was the fact that each offers products made from FSC-certified materials. Cisco Brothers sources 100% of their wood as FSC certified or reclaimed/recycled, while City Furniture’s Jameson discussed a recently added-line they marketed with FSC certified reclaimed wood, which Jameson said has exceeded their sales goals.

These results are not surprising, as a consistent theme mentioned at HPMKT was increased consumer desire for responsible sourcing. It also matches SFC’s recent poll, which indicates 90% of prompted consumers prefer sustainable products. While most manufacturers believe their sourcing is responsible, some - like Cisco Brothers and City Furniture - are providing products they can certify as responsibly sourced.
