This is a sad time for the FSC family as we mourn the loss of Jaime Levy, world-renowned advocate for the rights of indigenous peoples and a past member of FSC’s International Board of Directors.

Jaime represented the Social Chamber South on the Board of Directors between 2007 and 2013. He was also a member of the IUCN Specialist Group on Mountain Connectivity, Protected Areas and Mountainous Transboundary Landscapes, and an honorary member of the Indigenous Community Conservation Area consortium.

As the Executive Director of the Foundation for the Development of Community Alternatives for the Conservation of the Tropics, he worked tirelessly with indigenous communities in southwestern Colombia, northwestern Ecuador and the Amazon, to enable the sustainable management of community-owned forests.

Jaime’s contribution to FSC over the years has been invaluable. He will be particularly remembered for his work to strengthen the voice of indigenous peoples in the FSC system, where – among many other achievements – he was instrumental in the establishment of the Permanent Indigenous Peoples’ Committee.

Jaime passed away after a car accident in Ecuador on December 6, 2014. FSC’s Board of Directors, network partners, members and staff extend our deepest condolences to Jaime’s family.
