Greening Professional and Collegiate Sports

May 29, 2014

On July 21-23, 2014, Santa Clara, CA will host the Green Sports Alliance Summit, welcoming 600 leaders from professional and collegiate sports for three days of discussion, networking and education. Launched just a few years ago, the Alliance has quickly become a potent force to green the sports industry and an important partner for the Forest Stewardship Council.

The Green Sports Alliance is a nonprofit membership organization with a mission to help sports teams, venues and leagues enhance their environmental performance. To date, the Alliance includes 245 members, including 109 teams, 129 venues and seven leagues.

For many Alliance members, the journey to a higher level of environmental performance starts with a close look at energy, water, waste and recycling – all of which can be significant drivers for their bottom lines. As members address these first tier issues, others come into focus, including their use of forest products for hygiene, food service, marketing, operations and construction. It’s at this point that the Forest Stewardship Council stands ready to engage.

For FSC, the Green Sports Alliance Summit is a highly leveraged opportunity to engage with organizations that use huge quantities of forest products and have demonstrated a commitment to high environmental performance. At the Summit, FSC will host a booth to engage participants and will highlight other sponsors that are FSC certified or have strong FSC preference policies, such as Office Depot, Connor Sports, New Leaf and Plyboo. In addition, FSC US president, Corey Brinkema, will present during a session on sustainable purchasing

For companies that would like to sell products or services to the sports industry, the Green Sports Alliance Summit is an invaluable opportunity to engage leaders across all major leagues. We hope to see you there.
