Monadnock Celebrates 200 years

October 2, 2019

Monadnock Paper Mills, the oldest continuously operated paper mill in the United States, is celebrating its 200th anniversary this month. Founded in Bennington, New Hampshire, Monadnock has been FSC certified since 2005, offering a wide variety of certified paper and packaging options. Monadnock credits much of their success to its long-held focus on sustainability. According to their website, their next 200 years will be shaped by an investment in people, technology, and intellectual property.

The Verney family purchased the Monadnock mill in 1948 and still reside on the property today. Monadnock installed their own wastewater treatment facility, well before the Clean Water Act was passed. They have also been leaders in the recycled paper movement, launching a line of 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper. When Monadnock received its FSC certification in 2005, it was the first mill to adopt the (draft) FSC chip and fiber Chain-of-Custody standard. This move was in response to their customers continually requests for more sustainable offerings. Monadnock now has a wide variety of FSC-certified papers for printing and packaging. Monadnock also became ISO 14001 certified in 2006 to help drive adoption of sustainable practices throughout its organization.

Looking to the future, Monadnock will continue to make sustainability a priority. They are currently working to develop alternatives to various types of plastics including PCV, vinyl, rigid polystyrene, and others. Through its purchasing and manufacturing practices, Monadnock will continue to support conservation, as well as the health and well being of their community. Read more on the Monadnock website.
