New Wood Furniture Sustainability Scorecard Released

Furniture FSC

July 2018

On June 28, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) and the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC) launched the Wood Furniture Scorecard, a comprehensive assessment of wood sourcing policies and practices at more than 50 of the largest furniture retailers in North America. While NWF and the SFC are responsible for this scorecard, FSC US was consulted during its development.

The Scorecard gives consumers access to sustainability information on their favorite retailers, and offers guidance and tools for companies to improve and implement their wood sourcing policies. It covers publicly available information on how companies source virgin wood, and also addresses the use of recycled and reclaimed wood.

Scorecard results include seven ‘Top Scorers’: ABC Carpet & Home Williams-Sonoma Group, IKEA, Crate & Barrel, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, City Furniture, and Target. A further six companies earned ‘Honorable Mentions’ and two other companies publicly pledged to adopt comprehensive wood sourcing policies within the coming year.

The Wood Furniture Scorecard was developed to drive more responsible wood sourcing by furniture producers and retailers with the aim of reducing deforestation and forest degradation in their often complex supply chains. This industry is of critical importance to FSC, given it ranks as the third largest consumer of wood after the construction and paper industries.
